What causes that paint smell, anyway?
Paints have traditionally contained volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are are organic chemicals that have a high vapor pressure at ordinary room temperature. This causes large numbers of molecules to evaporate and enter the surrounding air, which is why products containing VOCs should be used in well-ventilated areas. Not only are VOCs responsibly for a strong odor, they can present a health risk to children, pregnant or nursing mothers, and people with asthma or allergies.
